Energy Saving Tips for Cooler Weather

With summer officially over, it’s time to start thinking of ways to save on energy costs when temperatures get a bit cooler. Prepare your home and be more energy efficient by following the tips below:

Take advantage of south-facing windows.

Instead of having your furnace or heater work overtime, use natural heat from the sun to warm your home. Open your curtains on windows that face the afternoon sun, letting the heat absorb into each room. Don’t forget to close your curtains once the sun goes down to prevent the heat from escaping.

Check your window seals.

Make sure you keep cool air out and warm air in by checking your window seals and door jams. Install proper weather stripping in areas that have cracks or excess gaps. Insulating your doors and windows can keep you from heating the outdoors, and let your HVAC system focus on your indoors.

Adjust your ceiling fans.

In the summer and warmer weather, you’ll want to make sure your fan rotates counterclockwise to pull warm air up. During cooler weather, however, a clockwise rotation will reverse airflow and push warm air down. Redistributing airflow in rooms can prevent pockets of cold air and can make rooms much more comfortable.

Set your thermostat below 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

Consider lowering the temperature in your home below 68 degrees Fahrenheit when you’re not at home. If you’re at work or at school, there’s no need to keep your home super cozy. Save energy by cutting back on consumption and only use your heater when you’re actually home. If you own a programmable or smart thermostat, you can have it set to kick up a degree or two before you arrive so you’re more comfortable.

Turn down your water heater.

Having a long hot shower might be relaxing, but it’s extremely energy inefficient. Check your water heater’s thermostat – many are set to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Before it gets too cold, set your water heater below 118 degrees. You’ll still have warm showers, but you won’t waste excess energy.
