As technology changes and evolves, plug-in electric vehicles (also known as electric cars or EVs) are becoming more common. Electric cars use a rechargeable battery-powered engine in place of a typical gas engine. Between 2010 and the end of last year, 1.1 million fully electric vehicles were sold in the U.S.

In addition to being environmentally friendly, fueling with electricity offers more advantages than you might think.


EVs Are Better for the Environment

The U.S. used nearly nine billion barrels of petroleum last year, two-thirds of which went towards transportation.  Our reliance on petroleum makes us vulnerable to price spikes and supply disruptions. Many car buyers are convinced to switch to an electric car because they are better for the environment. Fully electric vehicles don’t use an exhaust system and have no emissions. Since they don’t pump any fumes into the air, fully electric cars can help achieve cleaner air and lower greenhouse gas emissions.


Electricity is a Less Expensive, Renewable Resource

Electric cars can be powered naturally with renewable resources like solar, wind, and waterpower. For example, installing solar panels on your roof can in turn, power the electric car in your garage.  Gasoline, however, is created using oil, which is a natural resource that is not renewable.

Electricity is also less expensive than gas. Electric cars typically cost only one-third as much as gas-powered vehicles to run – on average, $421 per year vs. $1,500.

The median range (how far you can travel on electric power on a single charge) is now 250 miles. However, range can reach as high as 400-500 miles for some EV models. Recharge time is 4-15 hours on average, depending on battery size, depletion, and your access to a standard 120V outlet or a faster-charging 240V outlet. Just like a smartphone, you can plug in your EV when you get home and have it ready for you to use the next morning. By charging often, you may never need to go to a gas station again!

While this is a convenient feature, recharging at a public charging station is faster. There were more than 25,300 public EV charging stations available in 2020. Also, since EVs are more likely to be digitally connected, many EV charging stations provide the option to control charging from a smartphone app.


EVs Require Less Maintenance

Without the use of a gas engine, electric cars don’t need oil. That means no more oil changes or other maintenance and repairs associated with a traditional gas engine, which will provide additional savings in the years to come!

Fueling with electricity offers some advantages not available in conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. Because electric motors react quickly, EVs are very responsive and have very good torque.  An electric engine is also three times more efficient than a gasoline engine because electric motors are better at converting energy into motion.
