5 Ways to Reduce Your Energy Bill During the Winter

Here are five quick tips below to help you save energy, save money, and stay warm during the colder months:

1. Take advantage of heat from the sun

The first, and perhaps the easiest tip, is to open curtains on your south-facing windows during the day. This allows sunlight to naturally heat your home. Just remember to close them at night to reduce the chill you may feel from cold windows.

2. Close the damper

You should enjoy your fireplace this winter! But when you are not using it, keep the damper closed. An open damper creates a draft, pulling air from the room and sending heat — and your money — up the chimney.

3. Adjust the thermostat

When you are home and awake, set your thermostat as low as is comfortable. When you are asleep or out of the house, turn your thermostat back 7° to 10° for eight hours and you can save around 10% a year on your heating and cooling bills.

Using a smart thermostat can make it easy to set back your temperature, you can set it and forget it!

4. Adjust the water temperature

Hot water is a big energy user. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends keeping your water heater’s thermostat set at 120 degrees. Anything higher is unnecessary. Water that’s too hot can even be dangerous.

Every 10-degree reduction in your water heater’s thermostat can shave 3 to 5 percent off your bill.

5. Use LED lightbulbs

LED lightbulbs may not help with home heating costs, but they sure do make a difference in your electric bills. You can even use holiday LED light strings to reduce the cost of decorating your home for the winter holidays.

The monthly usage savings for a single bulb is around $1.25. So, most people will be able to recoup the cost of a new LED bulb in just over three months.
