Tips to Get Your Home Ready for Summer

With summer just around the corner, it’s time to get your home ready for the warmer months ahead – both indoors and out. Preparing your home ahead of time can help lower energy bills and increase the efficiency and life of your home. Here are our top tips to get your home summer-ready!

Clean your deck and patio

Chances are you’ll be spending a lot of time outside in the coming months, so making sure your deck and patio are summer-ready is crucial. Take advantage of the warm weather, and pressure-wash concrete patios and wood decks to get rid of any grime that accumulated from the winter. Summer is also a great time to consider resealing or repainting your deck and porch, they’ll look brand new!

Weed and mulch flower beds

Now that the snow has melted, it’s time to turn your attention to what lies underneath, your plants! Weeds can quickly take over flower beds and other landscaped areas around your home in the warmer months, so be sure to develop a routine to take care of weeds now. You should replace or replenish your mulch every 1-2 years. Regular maintenance ensures that your flowers and shrubs will continue to grow healthier and look better. Be sure to add fresh mulch to keep your landscaping in perfect condition.

Clean gutters and drains

While this may be your least favorite task, it’s an important one to get done before summer comes. Debris such as leaves and mud can clog the drains and once it piles up, you can experience leaks in your walls and roof.

Turn your ceiling fan counterclockwise

If you find yourself needing an extra boost of cold air this summer, try turning your ceiling fan counterclockwise. This not only pushes cool air down to the floor but can also reduce the use of AC in your home. Today, most ceiling fans include remote or wall controls that adjust the direction in which the blades rotate. However, you can always use a ladder or step stool to help you locate a direction switch on the fan’s motor housing. Flip the switch to the opposite direction and further boost your summer savings!

Let the Spring inside

Although your air conditioner is a warm weather staple, you don’t always need to use it! Take advantage of cooler mornings in the Spring and Summer by opening the windows to air out your home. Don’t forget to keep your curtains open so you can enjoy the natural light too!

Keep using your fireplace

Chances are, your fireplace will be retired for the next few months, but it doesn’t have to be! Instead of leaving it empty, you can use it as décor. Try filling it candles or plants and let it be a cheerful summer statement piece.
