The Persistent Problem of Plastic Pollution
Plastic was a transformative breakthrough when it was first invented. Plastics are convenient, lightweight, and durable. They can be molded into various shapes and can be mass-produced cheaply and quickly. However, while plastic is essential, plastic pollution has become a worldwide problem.
Plastic Production Has Increased Dramatically
Plastics have been around for well over a century and aren’t going away any time soon. It’s estimated that we’ve produced 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic so far. Of this, 6.3 billion metric tons—76% of the total produced—has ended up as garbage. If these trends continue, an estimated 12 billion metric tons of plastic waste will be clogging landfills or polluting the natural environment by 2050.
One of the biggest sources of plastic pollution is single-use plastics. Single-use plastics are any products intended to be used once and thrown away, and we use them more than you may realize. This includes grocery bags, plastic bottles, food packaging, cups, cutlery, straws, and dozens of other plastic products.
Reduce the Amount of Plastic You Use
A world without plastic is almost unimaginable today, but it’s up to us to be mindful of when plastic is not necessary. You might be wondering, “How can I reduce my plastic use?” Recycling plastic whenever possible can help offset the production of new plastics. While this is a good start, it’s even better to reduce the amount of plastic that needs to be manufactured in the first place. Below are a few of our favorite tips for reducing the use of plastic in your life:
- Use reusable containers for food storage instead of plastic baggies.
- Bring a reusable water bottle.
- Try a reusable straw.
- Bring your own grocery bags.
- Make your coffee at home and take a thermos.
- Cook at home instead of getting takeout.
