High temperatures, humidity, and heat waves are all sweaty reminders that we’re approaching the hottest season of the year. While we all love a good summer vacation, we don’t always love the heat. So we’re keeping things simple and sharing our best easy tips to kick off the summer and beat the heat.


  1. Keep the Blinds Closed

Our first instinct in the summer is to open our doors, windows, and blinds so we can enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. However, this won’t help you beat the heat. Did you know that up to 30% of unwanted heat comes from your windows? Making use of shades and curtains can actually lower indoor temperatures by up to 20 degrees! This prevents your home from becoming one big sauna. As a bonus, you can also save on your electric bill: no need for the air conditioner if your house is already cool.


  1. Build a DIY Air Conditioner

If your air conditioner needs replacing or you need an extra burst of cold air to get you through the day, you can make your own air personal air conditioner with items you already have around your house. Just fill a bowl or pan with ice and place it front of your fan. The breeze from your fan will pull coolness from the ice’s surface as it melts creating a refreshing mist.


  1. Take a Shower

Skip the morning shower and take one in the afternoon instead. This trick will benefit you most when the sun is at its highest point in the sky and temperatures are up. Since you’re going to take a shower anyway, why not try a cold one? When you’re done, be sure to let your hair air-dry for maximum cooling.


  1. Eat Fruit

Nothing says summer like cold, fresh fruit. When summer heat kicks in, consume cooling foods like watermelon and mint! They will keep you hydrated as well as restore balance and calmness to your body.

Did you know you lose potassium when you sweat? Do you know which foods are best to replace it? Bananas, strawberries, pomegranates, papaya, mangoes, and oranges are all great sources of potassium. Try cutting them up, freezing them, and blending them for a fun summer treat.


  1. Drink Your Coffee Hot

While iced coffee may be all the rage this time of year, don’t be so quick to ditch your hot teas and coffees. Depending on where you live, a hot drink might help you cool down faster than a cold drink. If you live in or are visiting a dry climate where your sweat can evaporate quickly, this tip is for you. If you live in a humid climate – stick to those iced coffees!
