Whether you’re in an area prone to snowstorms and deep-freezes, or you just like to keep warm during the winter months, we’re here for you! Check out these energy saving tips to keep your home warm during the coldest months of the year:
1. Take advantage of natural warmth – the sun!
The sun is the best and strongest natural solution to warming up your home. Draw back the curtains and let the sun shine into your home through your windows during the day. Redraw the curtains in the evening to help cover any drafty windows that may be letting wind and cold temperatures through.
2. Weather-proof your windows
Drafty windows? This one is an easy fix. Cover your windows with a window wrap or a heavy duty clear plastic sheet and seal with tape. This option is affordable, easy to install, and very effective. Another way to ensure that outdoor temperatures don’t seep through the windows in your home is to close the blinds and draw the curtains closed in the evening.
3. Adjust your ceiling fan rotation
Believe it or not, this could make a big difference in the temperature of your home! If you have ceiling fans, adjust the blade rotation to spin clockwise, as the angled rotation of the blades are designed to push cold air up and away and keep warm air circulating throughout the room.
4. Adjust your thermostat
Experts recommend turning your thermostat down to the lowest setting that you’re comfortable with while you’re home and awake. Decrease the temperature even more while you’re at work or sleeping to save between 5%-20% on your electric bills this winter! We recommend supplementing with lots of cozy blankets!
5. Insulate your water heater
Just like our bodies have to fight the cold to keep us warm, your hot water heater does the same for your home! Because it works to heat your home on its own, it eats up a lot of energy. A fiberglass insulation jacket can be purchased for roughly $30 and can save you up to 10% a month on your electric bill.
