How Does Natural Gas Work in Your Home?
Natural Gas Production
Natural gas is a non-renewable fossil fuel formed millions of years ago deep below the earth’s surface. After being extracted, natural gas is cleaned and processed. Then, the gas is sent through pipelines to storage facilities or distribution companies before being delivered to your home.
Strict safety standards control all aspects of production, transportation, distribution, and storage of natural gas. Also, because the gas has no odor, natural gas companies add odorants so that leaks can be detected by smell.
Using Natural Gas at Home
In most of the United States (except in Southern areas), the primary in-home use for natural gas is heating. The way that works, in simplest terms, is that a pipe connects natural gas supply to your home. The gas enters your furnace, where it is lit by burners. As the gas burns, it warms the air, which is circulated through the building.
Natural gas can also be used to power a variety of household appliances, such as:
• Water heater
• Air conditioner
• Stoves and grills
• Refrigerator and freezer
• Washing machine and dryer
• Fireplaces, fire pits
• Pool heaters
• Outdoor lighting
Is Natural Gas Right for You?
Natural gas is considered an efficient and clean-burning energy source, when compared to other fossil fuels, such as coal or petroleum. Another benefit is that the United States produces nearly all of the natural gas that it uses.
Although energy costs fluctuate, natural gas appliances can save you up to 30 percent on your utility bill compared to electric appliances. Gas appliances can be more expensive to purchase upfront but should save you money over time.2
