If you’re looking for ways to reduce your electric bill, ideas are all around you. We’ve compiled this list of simple ways to reduce electricity usage at home.

Easy Ways to Reduce Electricity Costs

Turn It Off

Turn off or unplug appliances when not in use. Turn lights off when leaving a room and/or dim the lights when you don’t need them at their brightest. You can also reduce energy use by lowering brightness levels on your TV and computer.

LED Lightbulbs

Residential LED lightbulbs use at least 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer than incandescent lighting.

Air Dry

When using the dishwasher, select the air-dry option.

Clean Those Coils

Clean your refrigerator coils twice a year. This helps the refrigerator run more efficiently and prolongs life expectancy of the appliance.

Energy-efficient Options

Look for the ENERGY STAR® label on light bulbs, home appliances, and electronics for products that meet strict efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Change Filters

Generally, furnace or A/C filters should be changed every three months. You might do this more or less often, depending on your household, but clean filters help your system run more efficiently, requiring less electricity.

Eliminate Leaks

Check insulation levels in your home. Check seals on windows, doors, and ductwork. And, when your furnace or A/C is running, keep doors and windows shut.

Curtains and Blinds

On warm days, close curtains and blinds to help block heat from entering your home. On cold days, open them to benefit from the sun’s natural heat.

Ceiling Fans

You can use ceiling fans to assist airflow when heating or cooling. In summer, run the fan counter-clockwise. In winter, run the fan clockwise on its lowest setting.

Low-cost Laundry

Whenever possible, use cold water wash cycles. Also, clean the dryer’s lint trap after every load and clean the exhaust duct once a year to keep the dryer working efficiently.

Adjust the Thermostat

Change the thermostat when you are away from home. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling by changing your thermostat from its normal setting by 7-10 degrees for 8 hours a day.
